June is my absolute favourite month out of all the months of the year. I love to celebrate June, as it contains both spring and summer, the very best seasons in the whole year.
Birthdays are celebrated with great frequency throughout my extended family in June. In fact, my own birthday falls in this most splendid month, so I am particularly biased in favour of it.
‘Dear old world’, she murmured, ‘you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you’. L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables)
I’ve been rereading L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books. This author’s effusive, lavish style has influenced my own writing for this post, I must confess.
It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside. Maud Hart Lovelace
In June, sweaters are shunned, shoes and socks traded for sandals, casual and colourful clothes chosen.
Children squirm at school desks, eyeing green grass and sunshine. Teachers count the days, eyeing planners and calendars.
Summertime hints at the edges: the weather warms, skies are bluer, clouds puffier, leaves resplendent. Best of all, gardens flourish, revealing flowers in abundance of every size and description.
It is the month of June, The month of leaves and roses,
When pleasant sights salute the eyes and pleasant scents the noses.
Nathaniel Parker Willis
Is it possible to choose a favourite bloom? Not for me. Each one is delicate and delightful, arrayed in unique splendour, its beauty lasting for only a moment, its glory sharp and poignant. So too with June — a fleeting few weeks, thirty days set in the middle of the year, a jewel of a month, savoured for a time, then released with a sigh.
I’m afraid to speak or move for fear that all this wonderful beauty will just vanish… like a broken silence. L.M. Montgomery
On this June day the buds in my garden are almost as enchanting as the open flowers. Things in bud bring, in the heat of a June noontide, the recollection of the loveliest days of the year…. Francis King
No matter what is going on in your world, take a moment to celebrate June, to savour its loveliness, and to thank the Creator for lavishing beauty upon this earth.
